2018 Train-the-Trainer Institutes

COVA will host a 4-day institutes to train professionals in victim services to enhance their presentation and facilitation skills. This training will cover topics in adult learning, presentation skills, understanding facilitation and gaining facilitation skills, presenting and facilitating with cultural humility, and facilitating online training.

Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on March 2, 2018. There is no deposit requirement this year. However, full tuition payment will be required within 30 days of receipt of the application. 
Pay your tuition for Train-the-Trainer
Sessions will start at 8:00 a.m. and finish at 5:00 p.m. each day, with a 1-hour lunch break. We will provide coffee and water throughout the day. Each participant will be responsible for their own meals, with the exception of one working lunch.

Registration Fee
The registration fee is $475. This includes all written materials for classroom modules, coffee, afternoon snacks, and graduation certificate.

Participants are responsible for paying for their own lodging, food, and travel expenses, with the exception of one working lunch. A limited number of scholarships of $100 toward tuition are available. There is no deposit requirement this year. However, full tuition payment will be required within 30 days of receipt of the application.

Cancellation Policy: Registration fee refunds, less a $50 handling fee, are available if a cancellation notice is received in writing within 1 week prior to the start of the training.

Attendee Requirements
Applicants must be currently working with a victim services agency that is either community based or system based and have a minimum of 2 years experience in the field. The applicant’s position should enable them to provide training to other victim services professionals and/or the community (e.g., Outreach or Volunteer Coordinator, Program Director, Lead Advocate, Case Manager. etc.). An application must be submitted with a resume and list of trainings and verification from a supervisor that you have agency support to attend. Space is limited and attendees will be selected based on several criteria and notified of acceptance no later than March 16, 2018. COVA strives to provide training to underserved areas of the State where equivalent training is not readily available. Payment arrangements will be made once attendees have been notified of acceptance. Please note your preferred dates when applying and we will do our best to accommodate.

Coursework
The institute is made up of 11 modules over the course of 4 days and learning objectives include:
  • Identify five common principles of adult learning and describe adult learning styles.
  • Prepare for and deliver an effective presentation.
  • Examine audience reaction and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Create a plan for handling questions and provide appropriate answers.
  • Describe techniques for overcoming nervousness.
  • Distinguish between presenting and facilitating and describe the responsibilities of a facilitator during training.
  • Distinguish among content, process, and relationship facilitation.
  • Use listening, questioning, and validating skills to facilitate learning.
  • Use various techniques to engage participants in discussions and activities.​
  • Use techniques to help participants build consensus and resolve conflicts.​​
  • Debrief or summarize a learning event.
  • Demonstrate effective co-facilitation skills.
  • Practice handling difficult situations and disruptive behaviors appropriately.
  • Define culture and diversity.
  • Explain the importance of cultural humility.
  • Develop strategies for incorporating cultural humility when designing and delivering training to diverse groups of participants.
  • Identify types of online training.
  • Explain the differences between online and in-person training.
  • Describe basic techniques for facilitating online training.
  • Demonstrate effective skills through execution of a co-facilitation with another participant.
  • Prepare feedback about other participants’ co-facilitations. 
  • Lead a successful training session.
About the Trainers
Maya Larson is a leading expert in leadership development and management training for federal, state, private sector, and nonprofit clients. She has more than 20 years of experience developing training programs and teaching courses on a variety of topics, including leadership skills, effective communication techniques, conflict management, performance management, change management, succession planning, grants management and processing, federal policies and regulations, and software applications. She has more than 15 years of experience managing projects focused on capacity building, technical assistance, and outreach in the fields of energy efficiency, federal acquisition and procurement, disaster recovery, supervisor and manager training, and leadership development. She has also led organizational change management and communications activities. Ms. Larson specializes in using collaborative learning techniques and interactive exercises to improve knowledge and skills retention. She has facilitated focus groups and meetings in which participants made decisions, solved problems, or exchanged ideas and information. She has also led team-building workshops, taught courses in team dynamics, and is proficient in administering the DiSC assessment tool.

Roi Holt retired as the first victim assistance program manager for the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. She began her career in victim services in Oregon during the mid-1970s as director of the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office Rape Victim Advocate Program. Ms. Holt developed and implemented the initial program and later expanded it to serve victims of all crimes. She continued this vital work with a domestic violence shelter and abused children. She later started two additional prosecutor-based victim assistance programs and worked for the Oregon Department of Justice. After retiring from the Oregon Department of Justice in 2006, she was selected to develop the Oregon State Victim Assistance Academy (OSVAA) as project manager. Ms. Holt wrote the initial grant proposal and, upon award, developed and implemented OSVAA. For 4 years, she refined the objectives and aims of OSVAA and served as a facilitator on a variety of subjects. She also trained the other faculty on the curriculum and basic presentation skills. Ms. Holt works as a consultant to numerous victim service agencies and provides training and technical assistance to sworn law enforcement personnel, attorneys, and other professionals. She currently teaches a course on crime victims at Clackamas Community College and has taught at both Western Oregon University and Marylhurst University in Oregon. Ms. Holt received her bachelor’s degree from Marylhurst University.
